IALM offers a range of membership grades for individuals and organisations, designed to reflect different levels of experience, expertise and engagement with the field. Whatever your stage, there is a grade to suit you.

Which membership type is right for me?
IALM offers a range of membership grades for both individuals and organisations, designed to reflect different levels of experience, expertise and engagement with the field. Whatever your stage — and whether you are joining as an individual or on behalf of an institution — there is a grade to suit you.
Membership is open to all. Our entry grades welcome anyone with a genuine interest in learning and metacognition and a wish to be part of our community. Our professional grades recognise those who can demonstrate relevant qualifications, professional experience and contribution to the field — and at these grades, members are entitled to use the corresponding IALM post-nominals, signifying their standing within the Institute.
Each grade carries its own benefits, eligibility criteria and annual subscription, set out below. Subscriptions are kept as affordable as possible, and concessionary rates and financial support are available to help ensure that cost is never a barrier to membership.

Our open-access grade for anyone with a genuine interest in learning, metacognition and the work of the Institute. No professional experience or formal qualifications required.
Annual subscription: £35
Designed for those currently studying, offering an early and affordable connection to the world you are preparing to enter.
Annual subscription: £20
The first of our professional grades, for early-career educators, tutors, coaches and other professionals beginning to apply learning science and metacognition in their work.
Annual subscription: £75
For established professionals with a proven track record in applying metacognition and learning science in their work.
Annual subscription: £95
Our highest individual grade, reserved for senior leaders, distinguished academics and those who have made a sustained contribution to advancing learning and metacognition.
Annual subscription: £175
For schools, colleges, universities and academy trusts. Benefits for up to five named staff, and entry into our Schools Membership Scheme for schools and colleges.
Annual subscription: £500 (up to 5 named staff)
For tutoring companies, ed-tech providers, training organisations and other commercial organisations working in or alongside education. Benefits for up to five named staff.
Annual subscription: £950 (up to 5 named staff)
For long-standing professional members who have retired from active work, keeping their connection, recognition and standing in the field.
Annual subscription: £45 (free from age 75)
