Yes. Membership of IALM is open to anyone who shares our commitment to advancing how people learn — and you can apply directly, at any time.

Our entry grades, Affiliate and Student Membership, welcome anyone with a genuine interest in learning and metacognition, with no qualifications or experience required. Our professional grades — Associate Member, Full Member and Fellow — are open to those who can demonstrate the relevant qualifications, experience and contribution set out in the eligibility criteria for each grade.

No. You don't need an invitation to become a member of IALM — anyone can apply directly, at any time. While members and partners may sometimes recommend the Institute to others, a recommendation is never required, and every application is considered on the same basis.

The one exception is our most senior grade: Fellowship may be conferred by invitation in recognition of distinguished contribution to the field. However, you can also apply for Fellowship directly if you believe you meet the criteria — so even here, an invitation is an option, not a requirement.

In most cases, no. References are not normally required to become a member of IALM.

For our entry grades, all you need is to complete the application form. For our professional grades, we ask for supporting evidence of your eligibility — such as a CV and details of your qualifications and experience — rather than references. Occasionally, if we need to verify something or clarify part of an application, we may get in touch to request further information or a reference, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Yes — former members are always welcome back, and we'd be glad to have you. If your membership has lapsed and you'd like to rejoin, simply get in touch and we'll help you pick up where you left off.

If you previously held one of our professional grades, you can normally return to that grade provided you still meet the relevant criteria, with your post-nominals reinstated on rejoining. Just contact us at [email protected] and we'll guide you through it.

The application form itself takes only a few minutes to complete.

What happens next depends on the grade you're applying for. For our entry grades, membership can be confirmed quickly once your application and payment are received. For our professional grades, applications include a short review of your supporting evidence against the criteria for the grade, which takes a little longer. In all cases, we aim to process applications as promptly as we can, and we'll keep you informed along the way.

For most applicants, very likely. Our community is built to be open and welcoming, and there is a grade to suit almost everyone.

Our entry grades are open to all, so if you apply for Affiliate or Student Membership and meet the simple criteria, you can expect to be welcomed in. Our professional grades are awarded on the basis of meeting the relevant criteria — and most people who apply for the grade that fits their experience are accepted. If your application suggests a different grade would be a better fit, we'll usually talk to you about that rather than simply turn you away, so there is nearly always a route to membership. If you're unsure which grade to apply for, just get in touch before you apply and we'll help you find the right one.

Applying online is the simplest and quickest way to join, and it's how most people apply. But it isn't the only way.

If you're unable to apply online, or if you have accessibility requirements, we'd be glad to help. Just contact us at [email protected] and we'll support you through an alternative route, so that everyone who wishes to join is able to. We want membership to be open and accessible to all.

Life Fellowship is available to existing Fellows, and to members who are eligible for Fellowship, who would prefer to pay once rather than renew their membership each year. In return for a one-off contribution, you become a Life Fellow of the Institute — entitled to use the post-nominal FIALM and to enjoy the benefits of Fellowship for the rest of your life, without any further subscription.

It is both a convenient way to maintain your Fellowship without annual renewals, and a meaningful act of support: your one-off contribution helps sustain the Institute's work over the long term, advancing learning and metacognition for the public benefit.

To be eligible for Life Fellowship, you must already hold, or meet the criteria for, our Fellow (FIALM) grade. If you would like to explore Life Fellowship, please contact us at [email protected], and we will be glad to discuss it with you.

From time to time, the Institute may confer Honorary Life Fellowship on individuals who have demonstrated outstanding merit in their field and have made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of learning and metacognition. Honorary Life Fellowship is conferred by invitation, as a mark of the Institute's highest recognition, and is awarded without subscription. It is our way of honouring those whose work has meaningfully advanced the understanding or practice of learning.

Our current annual subscriptions are:

• Student Membership — £20
• Affiliate Membership — £35
• Associate Member (AIALM) — £75
• Full Member (MIALM) — £95
• Fellow (FIALM) — £175
• Retired Membership — £45 (free for members aged 75 and over)

• Institutional Member (IMIALM) — £500 (for up to five named staff)
• Corporate Member (CMIALM) — £950 (for up to five named staff)

Affiliate Membership is our open-access grade for anyone with a genuine interest in learning, metacognition and the work of the Institute. It is ideal for those exploring the field, early in their journey, or who simply wish to connect with our community and support our mission — with no professional experience or formal qualifications required.

Student Membership is designed for those currently studying, offering an early and affordable connection to the world you are preparing to enter. Whether you are studying education, psychology, cognitive science or a related field — or are simply a student with a genuine interest in how people learn — this grade welcomes you into the IALM community from the very start of your journey.

Associate Membership is the first of our professional grades, and the first to carry an IALM post-nominal. It is designed for early-career educators, tutors, coaches and other professionals who have begun to apply the principles of learning science and metacognition in their work.

Full Membership is intended for established professionals with a proven track record in applying metacognition and learning science in their work. It recognises significant professional experience and a real contribution to the field, and represents a substantial step in your standing within the Institute.

Fellowship is the most senior individual grade of membership within IALM. It is reserved for senior leaders, distinguished academics, and individuals who have made a substantial and sustained contribution to the advancement of learning and metacognition. To be a Fellow is to be recognised among the most experienced and accomplished members of our community.

Institutional Membership is designed for educational institutions — schools, colleges, sixth forms, universities, academy trusts and training organisations — that wish to align with IALM's mission and bring the benefits of the Institute to their staff.

Corporate Membership is designed for commercial organisations — tutoring companies, ed-tech providers, training organisations, education consultancies and other businesses — that work in or alongside the world of learning and wish to align themselves with IALM's mission.

Membership of IALM need not end when your career does. Our Retired Membership grade allows long-standing professional members who have retired from active work to remain part of the Institute and its community — keeping their connection, their recognition, and their hard-earned standing in the field.

You'll be asked to provide your payment details when you complete your application.

For our entry grades, your membership is confirmed once your application and payment are received. For our professional grades, where applications are reviewed against the criteria for the grade, payment is only taken once your application has been approved — so you're never charged for a membership that hasn't been confirmed. If for any reason your application isn't successful, your payment details are handled securely and not used. Once your payment is complete, your membership and all its benefits begin straight away.

Yes. As well as paying your annual subscription in full, you can choose to pay by Direct Debit, spreading the cost across the year in manageable instalments. Many members find this the easiest and most convenient way to pay.

To set up a Direct Debit, simply choose this option when you apply, or contact us at [email protected] and we'll arrange it for you.

Yes. We believe that cost should never be a barrier to membership, and we offer several forms of support to help.

You can spread the cost of your subscription across the year by paying in instalments rather than in a single payment. We also offer concessionary rates, including reduced fees for students and retired members. And through the Amanda Poulter Access Bursary scheme, we are able to offer financial support towards membership and participation costs for those who would otherwise be unable to join.

If you are a higher-rate or additional-rate taxpayer, you may be able to claim tax relief in connection with your subscription.

IALM subscriptions are eligible for Gift Aid. Where you have made a Gift Aid declaration and you pay tax above the basic rate, you can claim back the difference between the basic rate and your highest rate of tax on your subscription, through your Self Assessment tax return. This is a claim you make directly to HMRC, not through the Institute.

If you would like to know more about Gift Aid, please see our Gift Aid section below. Please note that IALM is not able to provide tax advice, and any relief available will depend on your individual circumstances. If you're unsure, we'd encourage you to check your position with HMRC or a tax adviser.

(A separate form of tax relief may apply to professional subscriptions — see ‘Can I claim my IALM membership as a professional subscription?’ below.)

Not at present. Tax relief on professional subscriptions applies only to bodies included on HMRC's approved list of professional organisations (known as ‘List 3’), and generally only where membership is necessary for, or directly relevant to, your employment. IALM is not currently on this list, so membership cannot be claimed as a professional subscription for tax relief in this way.

This does not mean there is no tax benefit to membership, however. IALM subscriptions are eligible for Gift Aid, and higher-rate or additional-rate taxpayers may be able to claim relief through Gift Aid instead — see ‘Can I claim tax relief on my subscription?’ above.

As with all tax matters, your position depends on your individual circumstances, and IALM is not able to provide tax advice. If you're unsure, please check with HMRC or a tax adviser.

Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that allows charities to reclaim tax on donations and eligible subscriptions made by UK taxpayers. It means that for every £1 you give, IALM can claim an extra 25p from HMRC — at no additional cost to you.

So if you are a UK taxpayer and make a Gift Aid declaration, your subscription or donation is worth 25% more to the Institute, helping us do more to advance learning for the public benefit. All you need to do is confirm that you are eligible and make a simple declaration; we do the rest.

Yes. If you are an eligible UK taxpayer, you can Gift Aid both your IALM subscription and any donations you make to the Institute — increasing their value by 25% at no extra cost to you.

When you join, renew or donate, you'll be given the option to make a Gift Aid declaration. It takes just a moment, and once made, it allows us to reclaim Gift Aid on your eligible payments. You can read more about whether you qualify in ‘Am I eligible for Gift Aid?’ below.

To be eligible for Gift Aid, you must be a UK taxpayer, and you must pay enough UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax in the tax year to cover the amount that all the charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs you give to will reclaim on your donations and subscriptions that year (25p for every £1 you give).

If you are eligible, all you need to do is make a Gift Aid declaration when you join, renew or donate — and let us know if your circumstances change and you no longer pay enough tax, or if you stop being a UK taxpayer. Please note that IALM cannot give tax advice, and your eligibility depends on your personal circumstances; if you're unsure, you can find guidance on the HMRC website or speak to a tax adviser.

Your IALM membership is renewed annually, and renewing ensures you continue to enjoy everything membership offers without interruption: your access to resources and professional development, your professional recognition and post-nominals, and your place within our community.

Renewing is quick and straightforward, and we will always let you know in good time when your renewal is due. Here's what happens:

We'll remind you. As your renewal date approaches, we will be in touch to let you know, so your membership never lapses by accident.

Renew online or with us. You can renew quickly through your online member account, or by contacting our team directly if you prefer.

Choose how you pay. We offer flexible payment options to suit you — pay your annual subscription in full, or spread the cost across the year.

That's it. Once your renewal is complete, your membership and all its benefits simply continue, uninterrupted.

Renewing is the simplest way to ensure that membership keeps delivering for you — and that you remain part of something you helped to build.

Your career does not stand still, and neither does your membership. As you gain experience, qualifications and standing in the field, you may become eligible to move to a higher grade — from Affiliate to Associate, from Associate to Full Member, and in time to Fellowship, our most senior individual grade.

Upgrading is the way to ensure that your membership keeps pace with your achievements — giving you recognition that reflects who you have become, and the higher-level post-nominals that go with it. Here's how it works:

Step 1 — Check you're eligible. Take a look at the eligibility criteria for the grade you're aiming for, set out under Membership Levels. If you're unsure whether you qualify, just ask — we're always happy to advise.

Step 2 — Submit your request. Let us know you'd like to upgrade and provide the supporting evidence for your new grade, such as an updated CV and details of your relevant qualifications, experience and contribution to the field.

Step 3 — We'll review and confirm. We'll review your evidence against the criteria for your chosen grade and confirm your eligibility. If you need anything else to support your application, we'll let you know.

Step 4 — Complete your upgrade. Once confirmed, your membership will be updated to your new grade, along with the higher-level post-nominal and benefits that come with it.

Student Members moving into the next stage of their journey are welcome to transfer to Affiliate or Full Membership — just get in touch, and we'll help you make the move. Organisational members renew their membership rather than upgrade, but are always welcome to discuss their membership with us at any time.

If you wish to change membership and upgrade throughout the year, please get in contact with us. We will ensure you receive a pro-rata membership fee so you're not incurring additional costs.

Upgrading your membership is the best way to ensure your standing within the Institute matches your standing in the field. Here's why members choose to upgrade:

• Recognition that fits. A higher grade reflects the experience, expertise and contribution you have built — aligning your membership with who you have become as a professional.
• More distinguished post-nominals. Each grade carries its own post-nominal, from AIALM to MIALM to FIALM. Upgrading lets you display recognition that carries greater weight and signals greater seniority.
• A stronger professional profile. Higher membership grades enhance your credibility with peers, employers, clients and collaborators — a clear, independent marker of your expertise and commitment.
• A milestone worth marking. Moving up a grade is a moment of genuine professional achievement — a way to recognise your progress and celebrate how far you have come.
• A deeper role in the Institute. As you progress, you have the opportunity to contribute more — sharing your expertise, supporting others, and, at the most senior grades, helping to shape and champion the work of the Institute.
