At the Institute for Advanced Learning and Metacognition, our work is only ever as strong as the expertise behind it. Our Advisory Boards bring together leading researchers, practitioners and specialists who share our commitment to advancing the science and practice of learning.
Each board offers specialist insight in its field. When we design or analyse research, develop new work, or weigh a difficult question, we turn to our advisers for authoritative, evidence-informed guidance — and for the honest, constructive challenge that keeps our work rigorous and genuinely useful.
Our Advisory Boards are advisory in nature, and distinct from our Board of Trustees. Our trustees govern the Institute and are responsible for its decisions; our advisers inform and strengthen our thinking. This separation lets us draw on a wide circle of expertise while keeping our governance clear and accountable.

How our advisers inform our work
Nine Advisory Boards feed expertise and challenge to the Board of Trustees, who retain sole responsibility for deciding what to act on.
The trustees remain free to accept, adapt or decline any advice offered — the Advisory Boards inform our thinking, but do not govern the Institute.

What being an adviser involves
Appointments are normally for a term of three years, which may be renewed by agreement. The role is voluntary and unpaid, although reasonable, pre-agreed expenses may be reimbursed — and the time commitment is deliberately modest.
Every adviser agrees to the Advisory Board Framework and the Advisers' Code of Conduct on appointment, and we will never describe anyone publicly as associated with the Institute until they have agreed to this in writing.
