Our Work — Public Understanding

“Research that stays in a journal changes nothing. We exist to put it in front of the people who can actually use it.”

We work to bring the science of learning to a wider public audience — translating evidence into language, formats and conversations that reach beyond academia, so that good thinking about learning becomes common knowledge rather than specialist knowledge.

We champion the value of effective learning beyond our membership — deepening public understanding of metacognition and cognitive development, and working over time to bring an evidence-informed perspective to wider conversations about education.

Public understanding starts with a conversation, not a citation.
How we reach people

Four ways we're building public understanding

This programme is in active development. These are the channels we are building toward.

01

Public Talks & Events

Accessible talks that bring research on learning to general audiences.

02

Articles & Explainers

Plain-language writing that turns evidence into something genuinely useful.

03

Media Commentary

A considered, evidence-informed voice in wider conversations about learning.

04

Schools & Community Outreach

Bringing learning science directly to the communities it's meant to serve.

In practice

What public engagement looks like

Ideas only matter once they reach people. That's the thread running through everything in this section.
