Environmental and Sustainability Policy
1. Purpose
The Institute for Advanced Learning and Metacognition (IALM) recognises that all organisations, whatever their size, have a responsibility to act sustainably and to minimise their impact on the environment. This policy sets out our commitment to environmentally responsible practice and the actions we will take to support it.
As a young organisation that operates largely digitally and does not yet occupy its own premises, our direct environmental footprint is modest. This policy therefore focuses on the areas where we can make a genuine difference, and is written to grow with us.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all trustees, employees, volunteers and contractors acting on behalf of IALM, and to the way the Institute organises its activities, events and operations.
3. Our commitments
3.1 Digital-first operations
- operate digitally by default, keeping printing to a minimum and favouring electronic communication and document sharing;
- choose energy-efficient equipment and settings, and dispose of electrical and electronic equipment responsibly in line with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations; and
- where we use cloud, hosting or office services, prefer providers with credible environmental commitments.
3.2 Travel and meetings
- hold meetings and deliver activities online or in hybrid form by default, travelling only where it adds clear value;
- where travel is necessary, favour public transport, combine trips, and choose lower-carbon options; and
- be mindful of the environmental impact of any international travel, undertaking it only where there is a clear and compelling purpose.
3.3 Procurement and suppliers
- favour suppliers and partners who demonstrate sustainable and ethical practice, including local suppliers where practical;
- choose reusable, recycled or sustainably sourced products where a reasonable option exists; and
- take environmental considerations into account when selecting goods and services.
3.4 Waste and resources
- reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible, and minimise the use of single-use plastics;
- avoid unnecessary physical marketing materials in favour of digital alternatives; and
- dispose of any waste responsibly and in accordance with the law.
3.5 Events
- choose venues and delivery partners with good environmental practice;
- minimise waste and avoid unnecessary printed materials at events; and
- where catering is provided, encourage sustainable, plant-based and low-carbon options.
3.6 Awareness and influence
As an educational institute, our greatest contribution may be through influence and example. We will encourage environmentally responsible behaviour among our people, members and partners, and consider environmental sustainability in the way we design and deliver our work.
4. Responsibilities
The Board of Trustees holds overall responsibility for this policy and for ensuring it is implemented proportionately. Everyone connected with the Institute has a responsibility to act mindfully of the environment, and to support the commitments set out above, in their work for IALM.
5. Monitoring and review
This policy will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees at least annually. As the Institute grows, we will develop more specific and measurable commitments — which may, in time, include monitoring and reporting our environmental impact — and will keep this policy under active review so that our ambition grows with our capacity.
The Board of Trustees approved this policy on 24th June 2026.
